Scheduled processing · design walkthrough

Keep the result reliable—not just the schedule.

A scheduled report combines several steps and writes an output. Follow the run window, orchestration and recovery decisions that must survive a move.

Illustrative design · proposed checks have not run. No application, data or deployment is included.

Source → proposed target

Same application outcome.
Different operating model.

A daily process reads made-up inputs, prepares a report and publishes one result for the selected reporting window. No real financial or personal records are included.

ILLUSTRATIVE
  1. Run windowAmazon EventBridge ruleThe schedule starts the run. Time zone, overlap and missed-run behaviour need a deliberate policy.
  2. OrchestrationAWS Step FunctionsSeveral Lambda steps prepare and validate the report. Failures and retries affect the overall outcome.
  3. Published outputAmazon S3 reportThe report is saved with a stable run identity and an observable completion state.

Proposed portable targetA target to validate
PROPOSED
  1. Schedule + coordinationScheduler + job coordinatorPreserve the selected run window and explicit retry, overlap and restart rules.
  2. Processing + outputJob containers + object storeRun the approved processing steps and publish a validated output only when the job completes.

Proposed design · not deployed or tested as this application.

Preserve the outcome, not every AWS component.

A workflow may become coordinated jobs rather than a copy of every state-machine step. Its completion and recovery contract still matters.

What must still work

Checks that mean something to the team.

These are proposed acceptance criteria, not recorded results or a promise of current runner support.

1 · Required outcome

Publish the expected report

A fixed synthetic input produces the expected output for the selected reporting window.

Proposed check · not run
2 · Required outcome

Recover a failed step

An injected temporary failure follows the declared recovery path without publishing a partial report.

Proposed check · not run
3 · Required outcome

Rerun without duplication

Repeating the same run window does not create a second business result.

Proposed check · not run
Illustrative failure · not a measured result

A failed run leaves an incomplete report marked as complete.

Review step completion, output publication and restart boundaries. Then rerun the failed-step scenario with the same synthetic inputs.

Before relying on this design

What still needs validation?

  • Selected EventBridge, Step Functions, Lambda and S3 patterns are discoverable; this illustration is not evidence that the complete application ran.
  • Workflow translation, time-window/restart fixtures, fault injection and multi-step output checks need implementation and separate execution evidence.
  • Source and target scheduling, data formats and recovery semantics must be agreed. Automatic conversion or production-data migration is not established here.

What the handover should include

Application. Dependencies. Checks. Evidence.

A useful package needs approved application material, target configuration, a data plan, repeatable checks and deployment and cleanup instructions. This example does not include a runnable bundle.
